Organizing a Rally? - Updated!

Published by Laura at 5:08 pm under General

M. stepped up and did the legwork, and I’ve applied for a permit for a rally. Details coming later today!!

Update 2: Still waiting on confirmation, but in the meantime, we need to start thinking about signs. Any ideas?

Update 3: (5:10pm) No confirmation yet. But get your signs ready, because if our first request is not approved, we’ll work on getting another date and location.

There have been several people who would like to rally at the Capitol against the pay raises.

If we’re going to do this, we need:

  1. one person to take charge and see that the rest of this list gets done
  2. to learn if we need a permit and about parking, and to apply for the permit if it’s necessary. (if it costs something we can take donations to cover it)
  3. to select a day and time
  4. to notify the media
  5. to post on this site and as many others as possible when the rally is
  6. to get several volunteers to take photos and video
  7. to beg, borrow or steal some AV equipment and a podium or at least a bullhorn (and to know how to set that AV equipment up)
  8. and probably quite a lot else that I’m not thinking of

Please post a comment or email me what you’re willing to do and I’ll update this post accordingly. If there’s enough interest I’m sure we can do this.

I am ready to march depending on the day. If for some reason I can’t get away that day, I will be glad to donate money for the cause. Let’s do it. Keep me posted!

Whatever day the rally is held, we need to have people representing Tucker’s district with recall sign sheets, since his recall pettiton has started. It may not be a bad idea to let that be the day other recall pettions are started. It stands to reason that most people who show up for the rally will be from Baton Rouge or the immediate surrounding parishes. That would be a great place to collect signatures for the greater BR districts and get media attention on which recall actions have begun. It is just very important we look organized and have a spokeperson ready for the media attention. If we want the leges to take us seriously, we have to look like we have are act together. At this critical stage we can not afford to come across as a joke.

when will a recall petition be made for duplessis and eddie lambert.

  4. new2laon 19 Jun 2008 at 11:59 am

I just sent emails to the local hosts on WRNO 99.5 asking them to help spread the word.

    What else can I do?

  5. mad_cajunon 19 Jun 2008 at 12:11 pm

I can use myspace to promote this by sending out a bulletin or posting a blog. I suggest to the person in charge to create a myspace promoting the rally. (People make myspaces for various things- photography, business, politics).

new2 - slow down, wait until the permit is approved and we have confirmation! :-) It almost certainly will be, but it’s better to release all the facts at once.

kg - we’ve had some people in Duplessis’ district sign up, and the next step is to do what the Recall Tucker folks have done- to do the research, find out exactly how many people are registered to vote in that area, and assess how much volunteering people are going to be willing to do. The WORST POSSIBLE THING at this point would be for anyone to run off half cocked and start collecting signatures, as some folks on nola.com and other forums are advocating. While I appreciate their enthusiasm, that is exactly what killed the effort to recall Aaron Broussard. We don’t want the clock to start ticking until we’re READY and can go the whole distance.

Mad Cajun, excellent idea, can you set up the my space and maintain it?

As soon as the permit is approved, I will post the info here and if you will set up the my space, I’ll email you the details.

    Sorry…

    Here’s some sign ideas:

    Raise integrity, not pay.

Raise your pay, I raise my voice:
    RECALL!

I also think, though this may be more difficult (and more expensive) someone should get a sign with a blown up picture of Jindal’s campain pamphlet where he promises to stop legislators from giving themselves pay raises. May as well get everyone’s attention while we’re out there.

Just some ideas off the top of my head.

  10. speechladyon 19 Jun 2008 at 3:13 pm

Sign idea besides the obvious “recall pay raises”:

“All play and no work makes [ann/jim] a rich [girl/boy]“

  11. JeremyBon 19 Jun 2008 at 4:54 pm

Sign Idea.. Governor Jindal, what was the going rate for your word to the people of Louisiana?

  12. SLon 19 Jun 2008 at 5:36 pm

    Great site!

How about having the rally on the day the veto option expires which I believe is July 8th?

  13. Joseph Paineon 19 Jun 2008 at 5:59 pm

If you are planning to hold a rally make sure it is in the right place. The front steps of the Capitol building is not the correct venue. Remember the bill has passed. It has gone to the Governor. I believe it would be much more effective to be out on the street in front of the Mansion than in front of the Capitol. Perhaps the rally could walk from the Capitol to the Mansion. The point here is to make Jindal’s toes go numb and his palms sweat. He’s the one with the veto pen — therefore he’s the only one who can stop this legislation from taking effect.

    P.S. Facebook has been covered.

  15. adminon 19 Jun 2008 at 6:16 pm

We may have more than one rally - we’ll have to see how this one goes, that is, if the permit is approved…

Joseph, do you have a link for the Facebook?

I have just read through these comments…they are great…I think Laila is the Laila from ch. 26 (?).

    I am ready to attend a rally…don’t wait until July 8th…too risky….

AT 6:00, ch. 6, story about # of petitions requested from Dardonne’s office….

I am confident that Tucker is concerned…..beneath his arrogant and self-serving facade…..and he had the audacity to say: why is the Governor trying to antagonize the legislature?

Keep up the great work…legewatch….the citizens are stepping up to the plate…and to the rally and to the recalls…..

  18. Joeyon 19 Jun 2008 at 8:10 pm

I have received my recall packet already in the mail from the Sec of State. I must be one of the 10 people they are talking about. I do not trust any information I get from the capitol. I call and ask everyday how many phone calls the Governors office gets and the people I talk to say they can’t give out that information. Who in the Capitol is authorized to give out that kind of information? I have been transferred to every department imaginable and the only answer I get is I am not allowed to give that out. I did talk to one guy today that said they are 6 people answering lines and he takes around 150 to 200 calls per day.

  19. lizon 19 Jun 2008 at 10:06 pm

I just sent Duplessis an email. I am sure that she will not read it. I told her to “keep on talking arrogantly” because every
self-serving word she says about how she thinks we just do not understood how hard legislators work, and if we could see it “their way”, we would not have a problem with the raise they “voted for themselves”.

Every word she speaks is another piece of wood/fuel for the “RECALL FIRE”.

Keep talking Ann!! Just because you think we do not understand your “position and defense”, every word you speak highlights, underscores, emphasizes, focuses on and hightens our determination to proceed even more diligently with a recall….and a rally at the Governor’s mansion and or the capital…Citizens will give it their “best effort” and move forward knowing that our “votes” will make a difference in the next election…these actions will be etched in our minds…..

As for Jindal, did you see him on TV at that press conference. Did you see how arrogant and smart mouth he was to the reporters who repeatedly asked him about vetoing the raise.

What an image he presented to the public? Talk about no integrity and unprofessional ….and he is governor?

I am read to sign recalls on rep. and sen. from my districts. I am ready to a attend a rally.

    The link on Facebook is:

If that does not work just search groups for “Veto the Pay Raise”

  21. Lailaon 20 Jun 2008 at 8:59 am

No, I’m not the Laila from Ch. 26, but it would be funny if I were. I think it would be too risky for someone in journalism to stick their necks out on an issue like this. Can’t rock the boat, you know?

  22. saveourstateon 20 Jun 2008 at 9:36 am

Please keep us posted on the rally. I am from North LA and we want to be able to attend too. We would love to bring a bus load or more…we just need some time to schedule it.

  23. Rafeon 20 Jun 2008 at 9:41 am

Is there a way we can start just one recall list with all the people who voted for the raise on it ? Are do they have to be separate?

  24. ianon 20 Jun 2008 at 9:41 am

First great site, keep up the good work and the pressure on!

I suggest a rally sooner than later. Public and media attention is short lived. we must strike while the iron is hot!

I have been watching the live video from the chamber and wanted to know what is Senate Bill 755, it has something to do with road home. Jim Tucker just changed his vote from yes to no at the end of today, also another woman with the last name of Smith did the same thing. TO me this is apalling how they get a bill passed and then go back and change their vote.

  27. [...] may have been some confusion because on June 18th I posted information about the requests for a rally and what I thought it might take to pull it off. On June 19th I [...]
