Rally Update

Published by Laura at 10:29 am under General

We had originally applied for a permit for this coming Monday, and it was approved. However… after speaking to Steve Sabludowsky about his Citizen Can idea, considering ways that we can have the most impact, and considering that we’ve had emails from folks upstate who want to actually charter buses and come down for it, we canceled our application. Because we’re political novices, we simply jumped the gun. We WILL have a rally, but we’ll need to give our folks more time to plan to attend, and we’ll work together with other groups so we can have the maximum impact.

So stay tuned in for an announcement within the next week, and keep working on your signs!

    Keep an eye on SB543.

The Senate unanimously rejected (35-0) the house amendments to this bill. Why?

This was a bill the got out of the Senate based on the ‘mistatements’ by Senator Quinn that she was not making any substantial change to the law. She was just ‘organizing messy law’.

When the House committee called her on it - that the bill actually allowed the legislators and any workers down at the legislator to be exempt from all court processes as long as they could score a ‘committee hearing’ every 2 months. They limited the bill to only a 3 day limit after an out of session committee hearing.

There was another substantial (in words) amendment on the floor of the House but I don’t know that it made any other substantial changes to this law.

So given the limited changes, why did the Senate reject the house version of this bill?

And why did they assign Quinn to be one of the three people on their conference team?

After reviewing the Senate PDF for the date of 6/20/2008, It indicates that Senator Quinn made a motion to reject the House committee amendments.

It seems she is real keen on getting more excemptions for herself.

Thank you for delaying the protest. I was wondering how I could get Monday off to attend. Now this gives me more time to plan.
    Thanks for your hard work!

Well, ya know the old saying…….patience is a virtue.

I’d rather delay the rally for now……..it will give us more time to get organized and get the word out as well as allow us to make a bigger impact.

  5. lizon 20 Jun 2008 at 12:00 pm

I can’t wait to attend the rally…so excited.
Now on NOLA.com from 12-1, you can post questions to a reporter Mr. Scott regarding this pay raise and veto issues.

  6. saveourstateon 20 Jun 2008 at 12:13 pm

thanks for postponing the rally. The people in North La want to protest just as much as you do, trust me. We will be there too! Keep us posted.

    Can’t wait for the rally!!!!!!
Let me know what I can do to help

The legislative session ends Tuesday, so the representatives won’t be in Baton Rouge for the rally! Of course, Jindal may still be there, but I don’t expect a rally to accomplish much, to be honest. His mind seems to bet set.

  9. adminon 20 Jun 2008 at 1:40 pm

Since the lege has already passed this abomination, it’s on Jindal anyway. If Jindal lets it become law, we will harass the lege until they repeal it, the way they did in Pennsylvania, but right now Jindal has the power to stop it.

There’s a chance we can change his mind. His future political career is in real jeopardy right now and he knows it - we need to keep the pressure on.

Whenever and wherever we have the rally, we want to accomplish several goals -

    - make the legislature and Jindal understand this is not going away; they have gone too far and we’re going to put a stop to it
    - keep people outraged, as they should be
    - gain publicity for the recall efforts so more people understand that real change is possible if we work together

    JUNE 28!!! NO LATER!

    ***** IMPORTANT *****

The most important thing right now is the date of delivery of SB672 to the Governor; which was the 18th of June. The Bill will become law regardless of the Governor’s action ten days after delivery has occurred.

Therefore, any action which we hope to take must be scheduled no later than June 28th. If a rally is held on the 29th, the Governor will just look out the window and smile at us.

  14. [...] updated the post to note that I had applied for a permit and was waiting for approval. On June 20th I posted this: We had originally applied for a permit for this coming Monday, and it was approved. However… [...]
